Dr. Paul Hageman
Paul Hageman recently retired as Director of the School of Music and Regents Professor of Jazz Studies at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Since then, he has been awarded the position of Regents Professor and Chair Emeritus by the Texas A&M University System. He taught at TAMUK from 1983 to 2022 where he was the director of the Jazz Studies program and directed Jazz Band I. Dr. Hageman earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Louisiana Tech University and the Master of Music and Doctor of Arts degrees in Trombone Performance from the University of Northern Colorado. Dr. Hageman has served TMEA Region XIV as Jazz Chairman and has been a jazz clinician for numerous TMEA and ATSSB jazz bands. In 1999, he was selected to direct the Texas AllState Community College Jazz Ensemble at the TMEA Convention.
Under Dr. Hageman’s direction, TAMUK Jazz Band I was selected to perform at the TMEA Convention in 1995, 2003, 2009, 2013, and 2020. Jazz Band I has also performed at the TAMUK Jazz Festival, the Coastal Bend Jazz Festival, the UT Longhorn Jazz Festival, the Texas Jazz Festival, the RioFest Jazz Festival, the Fiesta Jazz Festival, the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival, and the Mobile Jazz Festival. In 2004, TAMUK Jazz Band I was selected as the winner of the College Big Band Category by DownBeat Magazine. Additionally, Jazz Band I was selected for Outstanding Performance in the Graduate College Big Band Category by DownBeat Magazine in 2010, 2020, and 2021. Hageman remains active in jazz music as a music arranger, clinician, adjudicator for jazz festivals, and as a member and director of the newly-formed professional jazz big band, the Coastal Bend Big Band (CB3). He is most proud of his many students who have gone on to be successful jazz ensemble directors, professional performers, and exceptional music educators at every level from elementary music to university faculty.
